Scores for Distributed Dancing
This interactive installation invites creative engagement through IF/ELSE playing cards. Performance facilitators encourage individuals to draw a card and enact one of a series of algorithmic prompts that press against social constructs shaping gendered embodiment in public space. For example, one card proposes: “IF alone, then move very quickly; IF not alone, then move very slowly.” The nuanced prompt language draws attention to internalized patterns such as shrinking versus spreading, the underutilization of physical strength, and practices of self-surveillance many women have adopted for personal safety.
The accumulated actions form a collective performance that unfolds through shifting, emergent patterns. The resulting experimental video series documents these engagements as a collective gesture, using layering techniques to overlap and time-shift individual responses. Video excerpts are presented within the installation so future participants can witness how the site has been transformed through prior interactions.
